Narrative Assessment - Eye on Nature

Narrative Assessment - Eye on Nature
Learner:   Toni                                                Learning Coach:  Mrs Croll
Date:  4 April 2017                                          Learning Area:  Science
Learning Experience:
On Tuesday 28th March, Toni attended the Eye on Nature event at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.   The purpose of this trip was to provide Toni with a variety of learning opportunities so that she may gain a deep understanding and appreciation of the fundamental processes that support life on the planet and to become a guardian of his living environment.
4Cs and Key Competencies:

Collaborating with others to create a healthy lunchbox and solve a food-plant activity.

Finding answers to his  curiosities through exploration and questions.

Toni learned how to hold a fish correctly so that it is not damaged.  Then, he may return it to the sea if he doesn’t need to keep it.
Developing his capabilities as a scientist by grouping plants, animals and other living things into science-based classifications.

Toni learned about several  butterflies and their preferred habitat, as well as participating in a game to match the flower with the fruit, e.g. pea.
Toni went on a bush walk and was introduced to a variety of native birds and the trees.  He learned which trees the birds  liked to feed from and live in.

Next Steps:
  • Share his learning with an audience, e.g. blog post, hui presentation
  • Investigate an area of interest in an iExplore
  • Support environmental activities around the school

Toni's Honey Bee Learning Story

Learner: Toni
Learning Coach: T.Dillner           Date: 3.3.16
Learning Area: iExperience - Science
Key Competency: Participating & Contributing
Learning Observed
During iExperience in Week 5, the learners were able to opt in to Sustainability related sessions. Toni chose to learn more about Honey Bees and why it is necessary to care for them on a global scale.
He learned about reasons why global bee populations are decreasing and how this connects to the foods we eat. We also looked at the products that bees provide for us e.g. honey. There were 10 bee related challenges that the learners could choose from. All of the activities required them to demonstrate curiosity. One challenge was to use a recipe that included honey as an ingredient. We made Crunchy Banana Pops. Toni had to cover a frozen banana with honey and then roll it in Rice Bubbles and sprinkles. Afterwards, he gave his Crunchy Banana Pop a rating out of 10 and discussed reasons for this.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Consider undertaking an iExplore to do with planting a bee friendly garden to help increase the number of bees in our school environment.
  • Alternatively, look at how you could plant bee friendly plants at home.
  • Make Crunchy Banana Pops at home using different toppings - describe how bees helped make the ingredients.
